Nova T: If you do not want hormones at all

NOVA T: For the woman who wants a hormone-free contraceptive

A hormone-free device that is safe to use for women of all ages, during breastfeeding, and can prevent pregnancy up to 12 years after installation

Women who suffer from hormonal side effects, or are unable to take hormones for any reason, will find hormone-free intrauterine devices to be an excellent solution to their problems.

If you are interested in a device without any hormones at all, Nova T may be exactly what you are looking for – a modern non-hormonal copper device that can prevent pregnancy for up to 5 years after installation.

Nova T works using one simple active ingredient – copper. It is a T-shaped device made of soft and flexible plastic, wrapped in a thin layer of copper around the arms and leg. Once it is installed and in place, you will not feel it.

How does a copper device work?

A non-hormonal intrauterine device uses copper to prevent pregnancy. Copper ions prevent sperm from reaching the ovum, and also prevent a fertilized egg from rooting. This is also why a copper device can also be used as an emergency contraceptive – a way to prevent pregnancy after unprotected sex. If the device is inserted within 120 hours (5 days) after unprotected sex, you can enjoy 99.9% effective protection. You can leave the device inside for as long as you want, for up to 5 years.

Benefits of nonhormonal IUD

One of the benefits of devices like the Nova T is that it lasts for years – but it’s not permanent. That is, if you decide you want to get pregnant, your fertility will return to normal immediately after the device is removed. And because Nova T is hormone-free, it will not stop your natural menstrual cycle, or monthly ovulation.

Another benefit of Nova T is the fact that it is safe to use among women of all ages, including girls, and even during breastfeeding. Because it is completely hormone-free, it does not carry the risk of side effects such as blood clots, which are related to hormonal devices.

And of course, the biggest benefit the device has to offer – relaxation. Once the device is in place, you no longer have to think about contraception. Until you decide it’s time to remove or replace the device, you can leave it in and not worry.

Nova T installation process

The device can be inserted at any time during the month, as long as the woman is not pregnant. The installation takes 15-20 minutes. After disinfecting the cervix, the doctor will measure the depth and position of the uterus and insert the device. When the device is in place, the doctor will shorten the pull wires of the device, which remain in the vagina and will be used in the future to remove the device.

Some women experience mild pain and discomfort, lasting a few seconds, while inserting the device. Painkillers can be taken prior to installation. About six months after the device is installed, an inspection will take place, during which the doctor will check that the device is in place correctly.

The device can be removed at any stage, and once removed, you return to being fertile, exactly as before.

Removing Nova T

To remove the device the doctor uses forceps, using which he grabs the device wires and gently pulls. The arms of the device will fold upwards as it withdraws from the uterus.

Mild bleeding and abdominal cramping can be expected during the removal process.

When should Nova T not be used?

  • When there are disorders in the uterus, such as large fibroids
  • When there is a pelvic infection, such as PID
  • When there is uterine or cervical cancer
  • When there is unexplained vaginal bleeding
  • In case of a copper allergy

Disadvantages of a non-hormonal device

First of all, keep in mind that although an intrauterine device is one of the most effective and convenient ways to prevent pregnancy, it does not protect you from sexually transmitted diseases and sexually transmitted infections. In addition, a copper device may disturb your normal period and can cause cramps, especially in the first 3-6 months. However, for most women, it improves once the body gets used to the device.
